I became a dog photographer by accident. My lifelong love of animals steered me towards a career in biology, and I spent more than 20 years as a University Professor teaching and doing research at the undergraduate and graduate level at various universities in this country and abroad. In 1999, while I was a visiting Research Professor at the University of Cape Town, I decided to sharpen my photography skills so I could do some wildlife and nature photography in beautiful South Africa. I started going to the dog shows because they offered a useful opportunity to practice – there were lots of dogs to photograph, black ones and white ones (good for exposure practice), running and walking, sun and shade, at all times of day and in all kinds of weather. Just about every photographically challenging situation a nature photographer will face can be found at a dog show if you go to enough of them. Plus, I love dogs. It was a perfect way to practice.

When I returned to the States, I continued to photograph show dogs and soon I had a clientele that included some of the top dogs in the country (you can visit my other website to learn more about my show dog photography).

What I most enjoy doing, however, is photographing dogs au naturale – outdoors in beautiful settings, doing what dogs do. My goal is to capture images that are both interesting and beautiful, and that will stand the test of time hanging on your wall.
